Last Wednesday, COP28 came to a close, but what did it mean for Belize? The country's delegation was led by Orlando Habet, the Minister of Sustainable Development, along with his CEO, and also included lead negotiators, ambassadors Carlos Fuller and Dr Janine Felson.

During the week and half, COP28 adopted the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement, with parties agreeing to transition away from fossil fuels. The Alliance of Small Island Developing States called for a New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance, which is positioned to succeed the current US $100 billion a year pledge. Also the Loss and Damage Fund received unanimous approval during the opening of the conference, and parties have pledged over US $700 million.

Particularly for Belize, Minister Habet and his CEO participated in 21 side events, including one co-organized between Belize and Taiwan on cross level governance and solutions for Global Net-Zero Transition.

Meanwhile the CEO in the Ministry of the Blue Economy along with the CEO in the Ministry of Public Utilities engaged in side events on agriculture, blue economy, and energy.

The delegation also engaged in a series of bilateral meetings fostering collaboration with key nations and organizations.
