The City Emergency Management Organization along with the Belize City Council participated in a Disaster Communication workshop today in preparation for the fast approaching hurricane season.

We spoke with the minister and the liaison officer about some of the issues that were discussed today, including improving their communication efficiency during times of disaster.

Melanie Dawson, CEMO Liaison Officer

"The purpose of this workshop is basically to kickstart the opening of the hurricane season. It's under the theme creating streamline communication and a better working environment. So this is comprised of our partners from NEMO. Our main stakeholders such as the Belize Red Cross and the UNICEF and other agencies."

"This is our preparation phase at this point right now so basically we are in preparation of getting our internal staff and our stakeholders ready and this time we took a different approach and we are working on our communication line within the EOC. So we want to ensure that we enhance our communication patterns within the EOC this way we can execute our rolls and responsibilities in a more effective and efficient way for the residents within the city."

Andre Perez, Minister of NEMO
"It's just basically a session that is organized by CEMO which is the city management organization and it's all about preparedness as we enter into the hurricane season and today's session is about inviting all the relevant departments to conduct a session on how we can work together in terms of when the storm comes around or when we have the threats of other potential dangers that come to the city."
