The Ministry of Agriculture today announced that there has been an outbreak of rabies in the Cayo District. There have been 5 confirmed cases of rabies diagnosed in two separate locations while suspected cases are being investigated in two other locations outside the Cayo District.

The rabies cases began to be detected in the Cayo District two weeks ago and since then the Ministry of Health, Agriculture and BAHA have activated their response mechanism. This includes the vaccination of cats and dogs by the Ministry of Health and the vaccination of cattle by BAHA personnel.

Rabies is an infectious disease that affects mammals and is transmissible to humans. The main cause for the disease's spread is believed to be vampire bats.
