Doctors suspect Grant shot himself in the region of his right temple and a difference of an inch is why he is alive today. Both Dr. Joel Cervantes and Dr. Victoria Meave, a visiting neurosurgeon told us that it'll be three days before he learns his fate.
Dr. Joel Cervantes,
"I think he's very fortunate to be alive. If he had directed the direction of the gun a little differently, perhaps we wouldn't even had taken him to surgery. Apparently the bullet entered at the right temper region and it seems that there is an exit injury on the left temper region. This caused very extensive damage in the region we call the frontal orbital region which is the part here in the front that includes the forehead as such and the region where our eye sockets are, the bone that is over this region here, our eyelids, and also the bone within the nasal region, the nose as such, was pretty fractured."
Keith Swift,
What is your prognosis for his recovery?
Dr. Joel Cervantes,
"It's a bit early to say as such but we do think there might be very extensive neurological damage as such. He seemed to be responding initially after the surgery however it's too soon to give a definite prognosis."
Dr. Victoria Meave,
"I will agree with Dr. Cervantes, it does like this gentleman has had fairly extensive damage to the front part of his brain, both sides, and it can take two to three days before we even begin, in this kind of situation, to have a feeling for what kind of prognosis that patient has, sometimes even longer than that, but certainly for the first couple of days the brain could be almost in shock and things not seem to work and potentially start to recover or maybe not. So usually with this kind of trauma we usually give two or three days before we even start to make any king of prognostic recommendations or feelings."
Even if he fully recovers, doctors warn that grant may lose sight in one of his eyes. And while his case is still uncertain, Constable Ian Geban is a very lucky man. He was in the lead team that cornered Grant, and Grant shot through the window of the police patrol. That bullet pierced the windshield and hit him in the forehead. But incredibly, while it fractured, his skull, it did not penetrate it, and Geban was treated and released.
