Two years ago, a delegation of 15 Nigerian health care providers arrived in Belize to serve at various levels in the Belizean health system. Now their volunteer tour of duty is over and on Sunday making a special visit to Belize was Nigerian High Commissioner Modupe Akitola. In addressing her countrymen Akitola explained that as developing countries Belize and Nigeria have an obligation to help one another and do away with the dependence on developed countries. Despite the absence of any representative from the Ministry of Health Akintola said the show must go on.

Modupe Akitola, Nigerian High Commissioner
"No country can stand on its own and that is why, because some of you have been asking me why did we come here, why did we give this aid. It is because it is the right thing to do. The developing countries should be out to assist one another now. We should not wait for developed countries only to come out to assist.

Nigeria and Belize, we enjoy very warm and excellent relations and what this program has done is to enhance the relations that exists between the two countries. And we, on our part, will continue to assist our brothers and sisters in different countries."

A new delegation of health workers are expected shortly. The number and their date for arrival is not yet set.
