It was triple the joy yesterday for Marie Burke when she delivered triplets at the KHGM. The triplets made their debut today and 7NEWS was there.
Marie Burke, Mother
"First when I took the ultrasound, the doctor at Medical Associates told me it was only two. Then from then the second ultrasound I took here at Karl Heusner and the doctor told me it is three because he told me to turn on my right side and then I knew I had three."
39-year-old Marie Burke gave birth to two girls and one baby boy yesterday morning. The triplets are all premature, born at only 32 weeks and waging in weight from 1.5 to 1.8 kilos. Triplets account for one in every 8,000 live births and it was indeed a surprise for Miss Burke.
Marie Burke,
"I was surprised and my husband was surprised too. I wasn't prepared for it but the doctor told me that I hit the jackpot. I didn't expect that because I wasn't expecting two, twins."
Dr. Ivan Lopez, medical officer at the Pediatric Ward says the triplets are doing well.
Dr. Ivan Lopez,
"We have started to feed the babies today. They are tolerating what they are fed but because of their prematurity, we have to keep them for a while here for observation because at this age their lungs are not fully developed yet so they need at least two weeks for them to be fully developed and they are prone to infections because their weak immune system due to prematurity. At the moment, they are doing fine. We go on a day to day evaluation. At the moment, we have a good prognosis. They are feeding fine, they are breathing well so we are just going to continue with that."
This multiplied modern day miracle has left this mother with only these lasting words.
Marie Burke,
"Well I am glad for it, God gave me a blessing for it so I will take care of it and mine it and everything."
Burke has three other children.
