Two year old Harold Jacob is buzzing around the KHMH tonight, full of energy but the toddler had a close call today when he drank down some kerosene. It is a miracle little Jacob had only swallowed a few drops when his mother Ingrid McKay noticed what was happening. According to Ingrid McKay who is the single mother of five children between the ages of two and ten years old, her baby thought the bottle of kerosene was water and poured it in his cup to drink. He was rushed to the KHMH where the doctors were able to save him. As a precaution, the two year old will spend the night in the hospital. When 7News spoke with Ingrid McKay she told us not only what happened but why she believes she is not responsible.
Ingrid McKay, Mother
“I was I my house and he went to haul the kerosene bottle under the table and he poured into a cup and then he drink it.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“How scared were you when you saw your child doing this?”
Ingrid McKay,
“I felt nervous.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“But who left the kerosene bottle around so that young Harold could have gotten it?”
Ingrid McKay,
“My boyfriend always goes to buy kerosene oil and then we left it right under the table.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“But you don’t think that is kind of dangerous?”
Ingrid McKay,
“Yes mam.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“Well we know it is dangerous because you mean always lost your son.”
Ingrid McKay,
“That is my baby and I don’t want nothing to happen to him again.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“So what will you do to make sure that when you take your son back home, the place will be safe for him?”
Ingrid McKay,
“He won’t stay with me he will stay with his father.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“Because of this incident?”
[Ingrid McKay Nods Head.]
Jacqueline Godwin,
“Do you believe you are responsible for this incident?”
Ingrid McKay,
“No.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“Why not?”
Ingrid McKay,
“Because tired talk to him and talk to him to left that and he has a bad style, he likes to interfere. Everything he sees he touches.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“But he is only two years old. Kerosene is something that could have killed your son but yet you choose to leave a bottle with kerosene under a table where young Harold could have gotten it. How come you don’t feel responsible?”
Ingrid McKay,
“Well I will say it is my fault and then I was there and he started to shake like he almost dead and then police took me to the hospital.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“How the police knew about what happened?”
Ingrid McKay,
“Because they called the police, my neighbour called the police so the police came and bring me here.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“Did the police say they are going to charge you for anything?”
Ingrid McKay,
“They haven’t told me nothing like that.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“So what did they have to do to young Harold?”
Ingrid McKay,
“Well from as I reach they put a drip on his hand and then they put something over his face to make he could breathe good.”
We are not certain if the police will further investigate or if social services will get involved, but Ingrid McKay told us that her son’s father has decided to take his child to his home to take better care of him.
