ACCORDING TO THE official figures, the number of active COVID cases in Belize has dramatically decreased, from yesterday's 4,832 to the 1,526 active cases being reported today. That's a difference of 3,306. And this decrease has to do with a new protocol that redefines the method of determining whether a person is recovered. According to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, quote, "individuals are declared clinically recovered 14 days after testing positive, assuming they present no signs and symptoms," End quote. Prior to this new protocol, which is guided by WHO, citizens needed a negative PCR test to be declared recovered.

Because of this new protocol, 151 persons were dubbed as recovered today. That means there were more recoveries than new cases identified, since that number is 119. This brings our daily positive rate to 15.5%. Our recovery percentage is 82.3% since, in total, there are 8,052 recoveries out of the total 9791 cases that have been confirmed in the country.

41 people are hospitalized and 4 are in the ICU. One new death - a male - was reported today, bringing our case fatality rate to 2.18% and bringing the total number of deaths to 213.

Out of the 119 new cases, the most - 47 - were identified in the Belize District followed by the Cayo District which has 32.
