Speaking via phone with Minister Chebat after that opening - we asked him about the state of Coronavirus infections in Belize right now. Looking at the figures posted nightly by the ministry - you might say that its trending down because of the decrease in the number of new cases. And, today, there are no COVID deaths to report.

But don't mistake a one day decrease for a trend - Chebat says the curve is not flattening, and, in fact, it will continue to rise through mid-January:

Cherisse Halsall - Reporter
"That spike, it comes with a curve. What are the experts saying about that curve? Is it now trending down?"

Hon. Michel Chebat- Minister of Health
"No it is not trending down as yet. We expect the spike to be somewhere in January, around the middle of January. So we do anticipate that we are going to have continuing numbers of positive cases coming out."
