The Covid number from the long weekend are out and they show a deepening crisis with community spread of the Delta variant in Belize City.
There were 9 deaths recorded between Thursday night and this morning: 4 in the Belize District, two each in Cayo and Orange Walk, and one in Corozal.
There are 362 new confirmed cases - 148 of them in the Belize District = and fully a third of those - 109 in Belize City. Cay has 106 cases with 17 reported in the border town of Benque Viejo. Presently there are 1,377 confirmed active cases nationally.
There are 40 active hospitalisations and a very worrying 9 of them in the ICU.
Health professionals we spoke to expect these numbers to worsen in the coming days as community spread continues in the city. We note also that we have seen a number of city residents passing away from COVID complications at home - as one did this morning in Nutmeg street in the Lake Independence area.
