And it's the delta variant that's the driving force by the rapidly increasing numbers in the third wave. Only a couple months ago, we were seeing single digit new cases identified. Now, we're in the three digit range and yesterday had a whopping 350 new cases. But according to Dr Diaz, this might not necessarily mean more infections but could be a result of more testing. She added that the number of cases actually in the country will always be higher than the number of cases being reported.
Dr Melissa Diaz, Deputy Director, Central Health Region
"I do know that everyday we didn't have high numbers in the hundreds especially when we were at the peak of that second wave. So we have to look at a few things, we are testing a lot more, there are rapid tests out there, there are private institutions that's also assisting us, we're working together with private institutions to help us to do a lot of rapid and PCR tests so we do have a lot more people being tested but when we look at it and when we look at information with confirmed cases we have to bear in mind d that also there are persons at home who are symptomatic or persons who have never presented to a health facility that we don't know about so we always look at that number and know that is not the reality, it more than likely is much more."
