And that bonus will provide a slight relief to the high cost of living, which only keeps getting higher. Earlier this month, we told you of the exorbitant fees charged for a burial if your loved one was infected with COVID. And we also told you that the cost would be even more if you planned on building a tomb since Citco has stepped out of that business and is leaving it to private companies. Today Mayor Bernard Wagner explained why they made this decision.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City

"What we found that we used to do a lot of the tombing and it was coming to a point where it was costing the council and we really want to get out of that business of tombing, it does not help the city, have the private people take on that part of the burial, we continue to do our part in ensuring that we have the facilities and maintain the facilities, maintaining a cemetery very expensive and it brings in no revenue to the city, it's essential a service that you provided and so we have to streamline it and ensure that you're not losing money so we essentially withdrew ourselves out of the tombing business and we have those undertakers now taking care of that and obviously when you do that the pricing is essentially up to those individuals or companies that do the tombing."
