An 8-Year-old girl was killed by electrocution yesterday morning. It happened in Pomona Village in the Stann Creek District around 10:00 AM. Jacqueline Azucena Valdez was outside helping her mother, 32 year old Yulma Portillo to do the dishes, but she got her clothes wet. She stepped away, went inside, and rolled out an old extension cord that had been stripped of its insulation. The child plugged it into an outlet to put on the television, and was instantaneously electrocuted.
Jacqueline was rushed to the Southern regional Hospital, but she she died while undergoing treatment. Police say she had severe burn marks on her body.
A postmortem conducted today determined Jacqueline's cause of death to be respiratory failure due to electrical injury.
