He spent the last 5 years specializing in Guyana studying Orthopaedics & Traumatology but he says his end goal is to return to Belize to continue his practice.

After we spotted an article on Dr. David Murillo in a Guyanese newspaper we reached out and spoke to him via Zoom today. He shared with us how his time in Guyana has enabled him to gain a wealth of knowledge on how to solve orthopedic cases in novel ways - like the innovative procedure that helped a local patient overcome nearly a year of debilitating pain from an ankle injury.

Dr. David Murillo, Orthopaedic & Traumatology Specialist:
"I left Belize as a general practitioner to specialise in this field and I have now recently completed my training in this field so I am now awaiting graduation so my work in Guyana is more of a learning phase, and in that process I have been in contact with the local consultants along with international consultants who have collaborated much with Guyana and well the exposure is much when you are trained here."

"Ankle injuries in general those are very difficult injuries to manage and in this particular case it was a gentleman who would have had one of those complex injuries and this doctor Wang fey his speciality would have been trauma and he would have come with years of experience when it comes to these types of injuries so he would have been able to of course give his ways of how he would address these types of injuries and hence the publication to show some of the collaborations done with the Chinese consultants and Guayana consultants here."

"So my end goal is to be home in Belize to practice medicine in Belize. I do plan on being here for a bit more. I'm not sure how long as yet but that transition is in process now."

Murillo works at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
