
Tonight, a second case of New World Screwworm has been detached in a human in Belize. The victim is a 60 year old man from Camalote village who is infected on his lower leg. He is being treated at the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan.
The case was just confirmed this evening and at the time surveillance teams were still on the ground checking for other possible infestations in the area. The victim is currently at the Western Regional Hospital receiving treatment.
With the screwworm presence now so widespread human infections are expected to continue to appear.
The first case reported yesterday was a 21-year-old male from Benque Viejo del Carmen Town.
The public is reminded that the key to preventing New World Screwworm in both animals and humans is proper wound care to avoid contact with the New World Screwworm fly. So, if you have an open wound, cover it up and treat it before it gets infected.
