Hundreds of injured Taiwanese citizens are currently recovering from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck a little over 24 hours ago.

For the scores of Belizeans studying there, it's a terrifying shock. And this major event was terrifying even for the citizens who are used to earthquakes. Courtney Menzies spoke with the Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize via telephone and has this story.

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan at 8 Wednesday morning - or 6 Tuesday night for Belize. Belizeans in different areas of Taiwan reported feeling the shake, and video footage shows whole buildings collapsing.

So far, 9 persons have been confirmed killed but searches continue. Today the Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize told us over the phone that none of the victims were Belizeans.

"We understand that these are all Taiwanese, of course hundreds injured. We have no reports so far about any major injuries for foreigners. My understanding is the Embassy in Belize in Taiwan has issued a statement and they liaised with Belizean students located in different regions in Taiwan to confirm that the students are all safe."

And earthquakes aren't uncommon in Taiwan, but it's been over two decades since they've had one of this magnitude. Still, the Ambassador says that they are prepared, and they also ensure the students are informed.

"Because of Taiwan's geographic location, it has earthquakes quite frequent but people don't feel them usually as most of the earthquakes are very minor. Major earthquakes like this time are rare. As reported the last time we had such major earthquake was 25 years ago in 1999."

"We have a system in place, we have early warning system and drills from time to time especially schools, office and community. We have regulations and rules to make sure buildings and infrastructure are built to withstand earthquakes. We also continue to do research and adopt technology to improve our response to earthquakes so in general Taiwan has a disaster response approach in the face of earthquakes."

"Especially when they are in the university, sometimes they will be informed of some kind of possibility, how to cope with earthquakes. I believe in the statement of the Embassy of Belize in Taiwan, they also reminded the students to pay attention to any news, monitor the news and official disaster management to help them be informed about the development."

"Ever since the news of the major earthquake broke last night our Embassy has received so many kind messages. Our Belizean friends expressed concern, condolences and support to people in Taiwan. I think such warm friendship and solidarity makes us feel that we are not alone in a trying time like this."
