In news out of the European Union, it's not the news of a Schengen waiver that many Belizeans may have been hoping for, but tonight there is a change in status for those applying for a Schengen visa.
Those applying at the embassies in either Guatemala or Mexico will now be eligible for five year multiple entry visas. Presently, only single entry Schengen visas are given. This decision was made by the European Commission and applies to Belizeans who hold any type of biometric passport.
According to a press release, quote, "The European Commission's decision reflects the strong and enduring partnership between the European Union and Belize and recognises that there are no particular security concerns associated with the travel of Belizean citizens to the EU." End quote.
But, like we said, it's not a waiver which so many countries in the region enjoy. Informed observers speculate that there could be other political reasons at play.
