On Wednesday, Kelly Street residents vented their anger after weeks of neglect by the City Council and sanitation company. Tonight all that garbage in the street, the overgrown lots, and pile of loose wood from a burnt house are gone. That's right, residents tell us that on the morning after we aired out story a Belize Waste control truck, which hadn't visited for weeks, was on their street to pick up the garbage. Today it was the sanitation company, SEL, which dispatched dozens of workers to the area. It may have been politically expedient for the powers that be to appease the residents, but whatever the motive, today those residents were satisfied.
Steve James, Area Resident
"This is the first time I have seen so many men from SEL through Hunter's Alley. I like what is going on right now because they are really putting a work in my area."
Dean Bodden, Area Resident
"About 3 trucks were around here this morning and about 90 plus workers were here and those boys really got down and did something. So I would really want to say that we have to big up SEL because that man is showing an effort to clean up our area. If it wasn't for that man, the area wouldn't look like this right now. The area looks well clean. The whole of this yard was filled with a lot of dirt and it took three truck loads to remove all the dirt and that was just for this yard."
No word as yet if Kelly Street is permanently on the Waste Control and sanitation company's schedules.
