A bus ran off the road between miles 54 and 55 on the Hummingbird Highway today. But it was not a Southern transport bus, in fact it was its upstart competitor, national bus service. The police report states that the bus driver Dwight Moguel told them that he was heading from Dangriga toward Belmopan when he heard a loud noise to the front of the bus after which he lost control and the ran off the road, colliding with a lamp post and then plunging into a culvert.
While that is the police's version, National Transport's CEO David Novelo says the bus was heading toward Belmopan when the driver saw vehicle in his lane as it overtook another. To avoid a head on collision the driver swerved off the road. If you a wondering why a National Bus was on the Hummingbird Highway, well that bus is one of 12 that was sent down there for a display of solidarity as bus drivers from Southern Transport and Benque Viejo were in Dangriga protesting against the Novelo's receivership which fired them.
