Last night we told you about the fourteen-year-old boy who survived a hit and run accident but lost all memory of his family. Tonight we have confirmed that his name is Wilfred Dixon and he has found his family. As we reported, he was knocked down on the Western Highway on September 20th. He was taken to the hospital in a coma and remained that way for six weeks. He later woke up and since then hospital and police have been trying to find his family. That search ended last night when we ran the story and family members saw him. Only 7NEWS was there for the emotional reunion and Keith Swift has the story.
Keith Swift Reporting,
An emotional Rosita Gillet Herbert had to be consoled by hospital staff as she sat in front of the son she thought she had lost three months ago. She brought a bottle of juice and a pack of chocolate biscuit for her son Wilfred Dixon. He is a son who, until last night, she thought was dead and already buried.
Rosita Gillet Herbert,
"I was worrying because I thought my son was dead and that wasn't so. I thought so because I heard a different talking in Corozal. I heard that they had chopped him up in his own house in Corozal and that wasn't so. "
Keith Swift,
You thought he had died?
Rosita Gillet Herbert,
"Yes but he is alive. Thank God for it. I worried about it everyday, tea, dinner, and tea I worried about it."
Mitchell Danderson is Rosita's supervisor at SEL. He says this morning a call changed her life.
Mitchell Danderson,
"Rose came to me in September requesting time off to go and deal with the death of her son. She came back and I asked what happened and she said that her relative had already dealt with the situation. I was in my office this morning when we received a call from a concerned citizen saying that they believe Rose's son is still alive. They said we could have looked at the news, which was last night. The person said she knows the child that is in the hospital and she knows Rose personally and she believes that Rose is not aware that her son is in the hospital."
She is now and after three months - mother and son have a lot of catching up to do.
We are still not sure of his age. Wilfred Dixon is now healthy enough to leave the hospital but his case is now considered a "social case" and it's in the hands of social workers at the hospital who will determine if his mother will regain custody.
And we are also happy to report that another family has been reunited just in time for Christmas. We told you about 14 year old Adrian Morris who
went missing from Mahogany Heights home on Tuesday December 6th. We ran the story last Wednesday after his worried mother asked us to show his picture. His mother will be sleeping better tonight because Adrian turned up this morning. The mother told us her son was reportedly in Roaring Creek for the past two weeks. There was no indication from his mother if he will return to the Youth Cadet Service Corps where he had been enrolled prior to disappearing.
