And come midnight on Saturday, you might want to prepare yourself for the disturbance of fireworks and firecrackers or dynamite that the young at heart and the idle of mind will surely go wild with.

"Certainly, we have issued a number of permits for persons to import and discharge fireworks. One of the things I found fascinating within the process was that there were a number of persons who applied for let's say $5,000 worth of fireworks and the reason they put was that it was for the under-privilege children of Belize City. My thing was how does fireworks benefits under-privilege children? and so I would not approve the $5,000, I would approve $2,000 and would send them a note and say take the other $3,000 and buy some gifts or some food to the under-privilege children. They can't eat fireworks. I found it very fascinating. But yes, they have permit to do so and while yes, it is going to be annoying to some people, we have to understand that it is a time of celebration, it is a time of joy, people are going to be excited that they are allowed to live to see the new year and the fireworks become a part of that excitement. Yes, children will be out with their parents at the park to watch the beautiful fireworks and we just have to live with it and when the fireworks is over, then we ask that people retire to their homes, so the police can get some rest too, because sometimes people don't understand that - we don't rest you know. When these activities are occurring, we have to be out there and the same police officers who are working these activities sometime til 2am are the same ones who have to return to work the following morning at 7am and this is what people don't understand. That's why when people ask for extension to go to 5am, I have to object, because how we going to have the officers work right through the night til 5am then have to come back and work at 7am. Then when the police come to work and tired and sleepy, we complain about them."
