There is an investigation ongoing into irregularities at the Immigration Department. 7News has received credible information which says that there are as many as 40 permanent residency documents that may have been falsified. There is no confirmed information on that tonight - but the commissioner said there is a police investigation:
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I know that we have an active investigation with immigration department. We are in collaboration with the director with an investigation involving some Haitians and I don't know much about it at this time, because the investigator is still with the director of immigration right now discussing the essence of that particular incident, so I can only say that for right now."
And while we wait and see what comes out of that, what is confirmed is that as many as 6 immigration officers absented themselves from duty at the airport today - one of the busiest days of the week at a terminal at the height of the tourism season. This caused a scramble to get officers into position to handle the passenger load. Information suggests that this semi sick-out is a form of protest against the senior management of the department - but that could not be confirmed. We'll keep following what we are told is an evolving situation.
