Last week, we told you that the Mayor of Belmopan announced he would be enforcing legislation that makes it illegal to have farm animals within city limits. We asked the Belmopan area rep what he thought of this - and whether that meant that the Governor General's chicken coop would have to go too.

Oscar Mira, Minister of Home Affairs & Enterprise
"I don't think that is a new regulation. I know that's an old regulation. What I know and now I'm speaking as the area representative for Belmopan is that in many instances, we see horses being, tied up in parks and being left there for days. That cannot happen. We see many animals just walking the streets, you know, and, being knocked down by vehicles, causing accidents."

"I think as, a pet owner or as a just, animal owner, you need to take responsibility and you need to make sure that they are adequately taken care of and adequately housed. You can't have them roaming the streets of the city. So I am going to discuss this with the with the mayor, because we're looking at the legislation. It's not a new one. It's a, it's an all the legislation that's here in Belmopan. But we are looking at it very closely and ensuring that it's not only about, animals that are roaming, but that you take responsibility for those animals that you keep."
