Tonight, a woman who wanted to buy the land her deceased mother had leased should be feeling some relief.
That's because the man who bought the land when the lease lapsed, government car czar Ashton Longsworth - has agreed to surrender the title he got so that the government can allow her to purchase it.
The story starts in 2015 when Liduvina Arana leased a parcel of land in Consejo, Corozal.
But she passed away in 2022, and in June of 2023, her daughter applied to purchase the land from government. But, by August of that same year, Longsworth had already gotten full title for the land, and just like that, it was gone.
Well, the story came out this morning on the "Plain and Straight" morning show - and we followed up with the CEO of Natural Resources Paul Thompson to find out if the land had been swiped from under the Arana family.
Thompson called us back this evening to say that he called Longsworth - who told him that he has no problem surrendering the title so that Arana's daughter can purchase it.
Longsworth told 7News he does expect to get another parcel in return. He says he will give the title back to the Ministry of Natural Resources tomorrow.
