There was some degree of anxiety today in Belmopan as government has concluded preparation of the list of contract officers who will be terminated. Government hopes to save $3 million annually by terminating those contracts, which at an average salary of $60,000 a year, works out to about 50 contract officers. Government is believed to spend as much as $10 million annually on contract officers, so this represents less than a third of those employees. The list, we are told will be sent out later this week and could include some high profile political names.
