And if you are wondering about the sudden prominence of city councilor/problem solver Marshall Nunez, well the reason is: he's the People's United Party candidate for mayor. Nunez of course is no stranger to municipal politics as he has topped the polls across the board in consecutive City Council elections. On March 1st of 2006 he will face the UDP's Zenaida Moya. Moya has said it will be a positive running against Nunez because he is part of the problem with City Hall. Nunez responded today.
Marshall Nunez, PUP Mayoral Candidate
"I am very pleased by the fact that she acknowledged that I am part of the City Council for the last ten years because she is actually saying that I am a part of the development of Belize City and that is what the people of Belize City need to know, that we are bringing development to the city."
Jules Vasquez,
So you don't feel your record is something to be ashamed of?
Marshall Nunez,
"I have the record."
Jules Vasquez,
But she said it is a record of shame, disgrace, and incompetence, not exactly in those words.
Marshall Nunez,
"Sincerely Jules I don't dwell on negatives. I deal strictly with positives and development is positive and that's what I represent."
Jules Vasquez,
Do you feel that as a woman, a female candidate, that she is able to evoke some sympathy or some sense of history that you cannot?
Marshall Nunez,
"Jules rightfully whenever you become engaged and you offer yourself for political office, at whatever level you do that, you need to bring something to the table and I am bringing you my record and I'm bringing my competence and my experience. I don't want to dwell on the negatives, I want people to see me for what I represent and what I've accomplished. That's my platform, that's where I am."
The full PUP City Council slate is to be announced but we do know that Carolyn trench-Sandiford, Keith Acosta, and Oscar Sabido will be new names the ticket. From the existing council's roster, Yasmin Shoman and Eloisa Trujeque will also be on the slate.
