What's the Director of Immigration Carmen Zetina doing paying Angelus Press out of his own pocket for immigration stamps? That's the question asked on Wave Radio this morning which offered proof that the director went to Angelus to order and pay for stamps that said "Jalacte", "indefinite entry" and "permitted to work" among other things. It's newsworthy because there's not even a known entry point at Jalacte and indefinite stay isn't a recognized immigration stamp.
Well today, Zetina told us that he did order the stamps and he is paying for them with his own money. He says that he only used his own money to speed up the process rather than wait for a financial order. He says he often does this and will be reimbursed by the department eventually.
As for the unusual stamps, he says that a statutory instrument has been signed to make Jalacte a point of entry and the "indefinite entry" and "permitted to work" stamps are new, because that's part of the provision for the CARICOM single market and economy which assures free movement of labor.
Zetina says that indeed the staff at Angelus balked at the personally approved request to print the stamps but he got the owner of the store to get it done regardless. He says he will pick up the new stamps and finish personally paying for them on Monday.
