Last night we showed you the new DPP Lutchman Sooknandan, he's the man who's supposed to uphold and enforce the laws. But what if his appointment is unlawful? And Senator Godwin Hulse says that's just what it is. Hulse today referred us to Section 61a of the constitution which says that the DPP cannot be appointed without the approval of the Senate. But he was. A government press release says the Governor General appointed him effective January first.
But Hulse says that is an insult to the Senate and mocks political reform. He points out that in 2005, the constitution was amended to say that the DPP's appointment must have the prior approval of the Senate.
The Senate meets to debate it on Monday. Its passage there is expected to be automatic because the government side will support it, and the Opposition Leader has said he supports it.
