Yesterday we told you about the US$10 million grant that the Minister of Housing Ralph Fonseca was negotiating with the Venezuelan government. A government release said that the money was proposed for projects in education, health roads and drainage.

That really translates into 8 months of election spending and because it's grant funds, it's the kind of free wheeling spending that government love months before an election, like a rolling river coarsing freely though the political landscape after the long drought or tight money and austerity.

Well that news has the Opposition bracing for an election spending spree. Party Leader Dean Barrow conceded that it is a consequential political development. He conceded that his party cannot match $20 million in election spending. He said he will meet urgently with his standard bearers and representatives to tell them that they have to concentrate on legwork and what the government has in liquidity, the UDP must match in sweat equity.
