The Telemedia Accommodation Agreement continues to be a thorn in the side of the government of Belize. More than that, it’s a terror to the treasury because a London Court says that Government owes the Telecommunications provider $38.5 million n damages for ignoring the Accommodation Agreement. Well now the Public Utilities Commission has stepped into say that two of the settlement deeds in that agreement are unlawful and contrary to the provisions of the Telecommunications Act and the PUC Act.
And today the PUC has filed papers in the court asking for an injunction blocking Telemedia from enforcing the provisions in the Settlement Deeds.
We are told that the Association of concerned Belizeans has filed a matching challenge in the courts. As we said earlier, it’s late breaking as the filing were made this evening, but it is significant because the Accommodation Agreement is now facing a Challenge from the Utilities regulator and that is another kettle of fish altogether. Not that Telemeida isn’t up to it, but government has opened up a new offensive in an escalating war.
