And while Barrow is in New York, politics in Belize remain at a fever pitch and the criticisms of his government for the healthcare woes and the controversial package of constitutional amendments continue to mount. The PUP today officially announced its position on the Seventh Amendment to the Constitution Bill. As we’ve reported it seeks to install the Caribbean Court of Justice as the final appellate court for Belize; to remove the dual citizenship disqualification for members of the house or senate and to allow the appointment of the Attorney General who is not a member of the House or Senate.
Well, instead of declaring a position on each issue, the Opposition is, quote “urging the PM to convene a committee made up of eminent Belizeans to form a constitution reform committee to look at these reforms in a holistic manner.” The Opposition statement also suggests that before introducing these new amendments the government must first bring some closure to the package of sixth constitutional amendments they introduced last year, which are tied up in litigation.
