The GSU they were perceived as the storm troopers of the UDP, a controversial paramilitary group that according to the new PUP government has to go.
Still, they're the assumed first line of defence against gang warfare, the type that in the last few days has once again reared its ugly head on the southside.
And while the unit is expected to be disbanded, we have to wonder whether it's the right time? It's a question we put the commissioner yesterday, he told us that the GSU will go the way of the pantry abolished in name but not in function.
Cherisse Halsall "Sir, we know that this new government, one of their mandates was to disband the GSU but with this level of gang warfare, do you think that is wise?"
Chester Williams - Commissioner of Police "The GSU might be disbanded but I want to assure the public that if that is so, that we are still going to maintain a unit that is going to be in the face of the gang members. It cannot be that we have a policing strategy moving forward that will make the Belizean people feel like gang members will now do as they please. So, whatever new unit we form is still going to ensure that we keep a grip on the gang situation and we'll be there to ensure that those persons who do not want to toe the line of living in a peaceful environment that yes it's not GSU it's a different name but at the end of the day we're going to ensure that gang members understand that they are not going to have their way in this City or this country."
