Earlier this month we told you that the Commissioners of the Public Utilities Commission appointed by former Prime Minister, Dean Barrow, resigned en masse even though their term in office extended until April 2021.

Well, today, the PUC announced that the vacant roles have been filled. Attorney Dean Molina has been appointed as their new chairman. A press release says Molina has substantial experience in Utility Regulation, having been the manager of Legal and Regulatory Affairs at BTL for five years and Director of standards, Tariffs and Compliance at the PUC for 3 years. Molina succeeds John Avery who held the seat for 12 years.

The other commissioners who have been appointed are Ricardo Nah, Carlo Keith, Arun Hotchandani, David Zabaneh, Mark Menzies, and Etienne Sharp.

A Jaguar Caught And Sent To Zoo

And while the PUC has new commissioners, The Belize Zoo has rehomed a new jaguar. The young male was captured in Pine Hills, Toledo District yesterday and members of the Forest Department, the Zoo and Ya'axche Conservation responded to ensure its safety and the safety of nearby farmers. The continuous expansion for farming and other developments have increased the likelihood of encounters with such predators, which can in turn cause losses to the farmers who would then jeopardise the safety of the precious cats. The Forest Department and its NGO partners work with the farmers to find solutions to the human-jaguar conflict.
