And while Senator Courtenay discussed sugar trade wars, Senator Osmany Salas discussed an industry that often involves turf wars and that's marijuana.
While he says the Belize Network of NGO's doesn't currently have an official position as yet on setting up a formal marijuana industry, he believes there's a lot more work that needs to be done before it can be created. He also believes that the small farmer should get an equal piece of the pie.
Osmany Salas - Senator "The BNN does not have a position on the matter currently but I can tell you when the matter of the decimalization of up to 10 grams of marijuana came up in the national assembly in the senate, which I supported by the way, I still raised some serious concerns that were stated by a number of different agencies as to Belize's preparedness in a number of areas - mental health area in particular, if and when marijuana is legalized, I'm talking about marijuana not hemp, but hemp, I mean you're allowed that benefit for hemp, a concern there is that this is not only for the big man but that small farmer also have a stake in that so there's a lot of work to do in that yet and at some point soon the BNN will have a position on that."
