And another man who holds a constitutionally enshrined post, has decided to bend to the government's wishes and resign. That is the former chairman of the Elections and Boundaries Commission, Steve Perera. The Prime Minister announced in the House of Representatives last month that he expected Perera to resign with the change of government, especially since, as Briceno put it, he is a UDP.

Perera bided his time and today he has finally made his decision public. In a statement he sent to us, he said that while it is unfortunate that the composition of the commission has become politicized, he realizes the importance of the government having to utilize its remaining resources. As such, he does not want to be the cause of unnecessary delays since GOB has decided not to work with the commission as it was previously composed.

And while his tenure was short, he said that he was grateful for the opportunity to assist the country with the November 2020 general elections. He ended his statement by hoping that future commissioners are not asked to resign by political parties, and that they should be allowed to enjoy the protections of their tenure.
