So what will happen with the sugar situation? Well, as we have reported, the CWU isn't just taking this move to Big Creek sitting down. They're hunting down legal documents before they make their next move, and they recently found a privatization document signed by Said Musa in 2005 which works in their favor. We asked the PM about that:
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"I have not seen the 2005 agreement, honestly I have not seen it so I don't even know what's in that agreement. We saw the 2006 where they said the sugar cannot be loaded down south but as I said it is an unenforceable MOU."
Jules Vasquez:
"Signed by your former prime minister though."
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Yes."
Courtney Menzies:
"Sir the 2005 one says the government will have to pay PBL damages for every basic commodity to go to Big Creek, are you prepared to pay these damages because the CWU workers are exploring this method and may also take this issue to court."
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Well I could assure you that we could make a very good case that the PBL, they have been managing this for 2002, 2003 and that they have not made the investment necessary so how they can hold us responsible for something like that when they have not made the necessary investment to improve the efficiency of the port."
