And the pandemic was just one of the topics the prime minister, John Briceno, spoke with the Mexican president about. He recently returned from his trip across the border and said that his meeting with the president was fruitful and will hopefully result in a lot of new projects for Belize.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister

"We had a very exciting five days in Mexico. We had several meetings with several functionaries. We met with Funatur, who is the group in charge of developing the Tren Maya project that connects entire south and southwest of Mexico. And looking at how sooner we can, more sooner hopefully than later, to link up Tren Maya. We discussed how at the moment to bring at least the range to end at the border where we can put the modern facilities for tourists to off load, and again goods that we can bring from Mexico. We also discussed a very interesting concept-How is it that we can connect San Pedro to Cancun, which is called the Rivera Maya, which is a canal that separates the island of Ambergris Caye from Mexico. So once, you can connect them, you can get in your car from San Pedro drive all the way to Cancun, or from Cancun drive all the way to San Pedro. We are talking to Funatur to see how we can develop a master development plan for northern San Pedro."

"The Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai, met with his counterparts to follow the discussions that we already have. As it is right now we manage to get them to accept the exportation of shrimp from Belize into Mexico. We are working hard to get more of our cattle into Mexico and when I met with the President Andres Manuel López Obrador, we spoke about to see if we can remove those import duties, they have so that we can be more competitive. We had a very good meeting, it went more than an hour and we spoke about the partial scope agreement, on trade and investment, we discuss Escuela Mexico, now we were talking about setting up an Escuela Mexico in Pueblo Viejo in the Toledo District and they are prepared to do the funding for that. We also discuss about the vaccines and so many other projects as I mentioned."
