Today workers at DFC branches in 6 districts took their lunch hour to show some solidarity against a proposed pay cut. Unionized workers - all dressed in black - took time out of their lunch hour to sing the union song, "Solidarity Forever."
We spoke to the Chief Shop Steward Pablo Cawich, and he said that it was not a protest or any kind of industrial action, just, quote, "an activity to motivate ourselves to continue working hard and to remind us that the i)nothing can happen without the labour force and ii)we are stronger together and need to be united."
The union has been negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement since June of last year - and included in that is a proposal for a 10% pay cut. A new proposal brings that proposed cut down to 8%. The workers had requested an increase in their opening proposals - so the two sides are very far apart.
The DFC has 105 workers - down from 121 after 15 persons recently resigned - many of them reportedly in frustration.
They are represented by the Christian Workers Union.
