And those ridiculous years of colonial rule provide one of the reasons many Belizeans just can't see an independent 21st Century Belize taking on another monarch as the head of state.
The news tonight is that Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa says that the people should decide whether Belize continues as a constitutional monarchy in a referendum - at the same time when they decide whether to legalize marijuana:

"I agree, I believe the time has come and many members of cabinet feel the same way that we are approaching that point now to break away from the monarchy and as I said previously, I believe that is an issue that should actually be put to a referendum hopefully when it is we do have the referendum on cannabis - that is a second issue that we can place on the ballot to decide whether or not we keep the monarchy."
