And while we hear that even Leader Shyne Barrow is softening up to the idea of a Faber return, he's surely not warmed up to the idea of an 87 year old Acting Justice of the High Court.
As we told you last week the Prime Minister has informed the leader of the opposition that he intends to appoint Senior Counsel Courtenay to be a Justice of the High Court for two months starting on the first March.
But Opposition Leader Barrow has written to the Prime Minister saying, quote, "While on merits the Opposition offered no objections to Derek Courtenay's appointment to the High Court as a matter of legality Mr Courtenay cannot be appointed due to his age of 87…." End quote.
We asked the former AG about the appointment yesterday via Zoom:
Mike Peyrefitte, Chairman, UDP

"I know you can argue legally and there is something in the law that allows you to say that an acting judge can be any age, but we have a situation where if you are a fulltime judge and you turn 65 you have to retire. But the government can extend you to 75 and you have to go, just go. So, if you have to be gone at 75, no questions ask, the how can you come in at 87? Kneejerk reaction? Who could object to a person like that, but he's 87 and even if you look pass the age issue, fine. Let is say you're 95 and you're still fit, but why only 2 months? I don't get the 2 months thing."
