The Briceno Administration suffered another setback in court today when the Supreme Court ruled that it wrongfully terminated agreements with Ecological Systems Limited, the company that was given a 25-year lease to operate the Commerce Bight Port.
Recological - through its attorney Dean Barrow - sued the Belize Port Authority And The Minister Of Public Utilities & Logistics for the wrongful termination of the Rental and the Lease Agreements which Recological had finalized with the Barrow Administration just days before the General Election.
In May of 2021, the then Ports Minister Rodwell Ferguson went to the house to cancel the last-minute lease that the Barrow Administration granted to Recological.
Well, last minute or not, they were binding - that is the finding of Justice Genevieve Chabot in a judgement handed down today. She found that the Belize Port authority is responsible for the wrongful termination of the Rental Agreement and The Minister Of Public Utilities & Logistics is responsible for the wrongful termination of the Lease Agreement.
So, now that liability has been established, the Court now proceeds to an assessment of damages.
