Should freedom of the press be enshrined in Belize's constitution? Right now, the free press is protected only by the freedom of expression. But should there be a specific provision to protect the freedom of the press?
That's what Uncut was about on Wednesday night - and here's what attorney Darrell Bradley had to say about it. He has been facilitating sessions for the PCC where he has emerged as an advocate for an empowered, emboldened press protected by a cons tuitional provision:
Darrell Bradley. Attorney
"To also recognize the importance of the press, so that for example you are not giving a right. You are saying that when you talk about the freedom of the press, that is a protective right that guards the society and that is so fundamental that it has to be expressed in the Constitution."
"It's about time that we put that in our Constitution. It's in the US Constitution, it's in the Canadian Constitution. In the United Kingdom they don't have a written Constitution but they have conventions and statute laws that recognize the fundamental freedom and right of the press."
Jules Vasquez
"But let me ask you something specific to your profession. One of the greatest nuisances and nightmares for media practitioners is the thing known as the lawyer letter."
Uncut repeats on Sunday morning on Channel 7.
