Turning now to politics, the UDP's mayoral candidate stepped into the spotlight today for an interview about her campaign, which is a first for the educator and social researcher.

Dr. Nelma Mortis says voters she's interacted with are focussed on national, not local issues:

Dr. Nelma Mortis, UDP Mayoral Candidate
"The people are waiting for a change. It's amazing the feedback I'm getting on the ground and I find it very heartening because of what I'm hearing from them and what they are going through on the ground."

"The matter that is coming up is more of national issues rather than their local issues. While I have cited the local issues because I've walked the complaint coming from the general public is that of national issues particularly the high cost of living, the fact that pantry was taken away and among other things. We will use this election as a gauge for the general election which supposed to come shortly after but I want to say that my city council's manifesto is based on three broad areas; the environment, economic development and also that of social equity."
