But, not so fast says former Mayor Anthony Chanona. He's the one who opened George Price Boulevard back in 20023, and told Plus TV yesterday that what the current council and area rep are doing is just plain illegal:
Tony Chanona, Former Mayor, Belmopan

"And having held the office as mayor of Belmopan. I am very familiar with the law and the law says that before these works can be executed. There is a process and the process is you must prior publish by Gazette four weeks prior to doing these works. Notice inviting the residents, informing the residents what you are going to do, inviting them to respond in writing."
"The law doesn't say anything about verbal. In writing. And then the City council. The City Council is the party vested with this power for these works. Not any other entity."
And Chanona may have just found a fitting ally in the current Mayor Sharon Palacio - who is at odds with her current councillors and the area rep. Reports say she will issue a stop order to the contractors currently working on the project. We'll stay tuned for that.
