On October 8th, Caye Caulker residents will vote in a referendum to determine whether they want to legalize marijuana on the island.

And while the "Legalize It" campaign - which includes the voice behind the petition, Councillor Ilya Rosado - is being launched, it features what looks to be an expected political endorsement. Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries Kareem Musa can be seen in the ad saying, quote, "it is time for facts not fear." While he doesn't tell residents how they should vote, his presence in the ad for the "Legalize It" team suggests which side he's leaning towards. He's a snippet of it.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs & New Growth Industries
"An island referendum to decide whether we move forward with a regulated and responsible cannabis industry or whether we continue the illegal trade."

"Wherever you stand let us always remember to be mindful and respectful of each other's views."

"No matter the outcome on October 8th, cannabis possession will still be legal in Belize. It has been since 2017. So what you are going to be deciding on is whether you want regulation."

"Regulation imposes an age limit, ID checks, quality standards, authorized points of sale, and consumption, things that the illegal market does not do. It is time for facts, not fear. Do your own research and make the decision that makes sense."

On the other side is the Hope Not Dope Campaign, which is organized by pastors and headed by Senator-Pastor Louis Wade Jr. They have a list of 10 reasons why Caye Caulker should vote "no", including protecting the youth, safeguarding health, upholding religious beliefs, and guarding against crime.
