So Bennett - who is a former BDF soldier joins Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira, who is also a former BDF. So can two military men head a civilian law enforcement department?
We asked Bennett about that:
Jules Vasquez
"That perhaps it's not ideal for two persons with a military background, with an original BDF background to head a civilian police force."
Admiral Elton Bennett, CEO - Home Affairs
"Yeah. So I'm not being employed as the Commissioner of police. So I'm not in an operational role at all. My role in strategy and policy is pretty much providing oversight of the leadership of different departments within the ministry. I have no intentions and no desire, and it's not my place to be in the operational matters of the police department."
"So, so to answer your question, if you think it's a good fit for a military officer, to be in such a leadership position. Absolutely. Our military officers are trained in leadership and management. We are prepared for policy. We are prepared for the implementation of strategy. And that's exactly where we come in. We believe that we'll be able to complement the operational deployment of the police department."
"I would be able to add structure and support to the administration in order for it to continue to improve."
