Belize's Dr Carla Barnett - who is the Secretary General of CARICOM is under pressure tonight. That's because it was announced yesterday that during the recent CARICOM Conference of Heads of Government the required majority of CARICOM Heads agreed to the reappointment of Dr. Carla Barnett as Secretary-General. With that, her second term of office will begin in August 2026.
But, one prominent regional head is not at all happy with it. That's Trinidadian Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar who has said she does not support Barnett's reappointment and that Trinidad and Tobago will be reducing its financial contribution to the regional group.
At the recent Heads conference Persad-Bissessar had complained publicly in her remarks to the gathering that she formally wrote the Secretariat a letter when she was leader of the opposition and got no response.
