And while Iguana Creek remains under water, residents of Belama Phases three and four are also worried about rising water in their communities. 2 families from phase four had to be evacuated last night and Belize City’s NEMO team is ready for more as the water comes down-river headed to the sea. City Councillor Phillip Willoughby is in charge of emergency response for the city.
Phillip Willoughby, CEMO Coordinator
“Until last night the water was rising between three and four as is raising in the Belize River Valley area. I don’t know if the crest has reached that far yet or if it was owing to the rains but that is the situation in Belama Phase 4 and 3.”
Jules Vasquez,
What’s the situation with evacuees or people who have to move from that area?
Phillip Willoughby,
“Well once any persons or families would like to evacuate they can call myself or any of the committee members. Sometime you get information through the various media houses and as we get those information we act and respond immediately.
Going into Sunday at about eleven o’clock or so the entire city was flooded. It is not the entire city that is considered to be low lying area, even though we are on the coast, but predominantly I am looking with concern at the Jane Usher Boulevard area, some parts of the Faber’s Road area, the Lake I area, definitely the Belama Phase 2, 3, 4, and parts of West Landivar and the Bella Vista area.”
CEMO is also in charge of mile 8 on the Western Highway, Vista del Mar, Bella Vista and Ladyville. Willoughby says anyone with a flooding emergency can call him at 628-6947.
