And for the residents of the Belize District, the memory of the last category 1 hurricane is fresh enough. That was Hurricane Earl in 2016 and it did major damage primarily in Belize City and Ladyville. While the storm was a category one, it sat over the city for hours, and left a wide swathe of damage.

Again, the latest NEMO advisory says, quote "Residents across the country should be prepared for category 1 hurricane force winds between 74 and 95 mph. This system could also produce rainfall of up to 4-6 inches across the country which could lead to flash flooding and possible landslides."
