It's a staple of the Belizean diet and tonight, the bad news is that the price of chicken is going up sharply.
This morning, the poultry producers under the name of the Belize Agro-Productive Sector Group sent out a release saying that effective today the price of whole chicken will go up by 22 cents per pound. The current average price of chicken stands at $1.72 and with the increase it is going up to $1.94 per pound. The producers explain that the increase is owing to hike sin the price of feedstock such as corn and soybean.
The Ministry of Agriculture today confirmed that there has been low production of corn last year and that may be contributing to the increase. They say they'll try to stabilize the price situation of corn. They would not comment on whether there was any warning from the producers about this increase.
